What is Basmati Rice?
Basmati rice is a long-grain aromatic rice that comes in both white and brown varieties. It is commonly found in traditional Indian dishes such curries, rice pilafs or biryanis.
The word “basmati” means “fragrant” so you’ll find your home filling with a nutty aroma as the rice cooks.
The mild nutty flavor of basmati is what differentiates it from jasmine or long-grain white rice. You’ll also find this slender rice becomes longer once cooked and is known for soaking up the flavor of any liquid or sauce.

Frequently Asked Questions
Basmati rice takes only 5 minutes under high pressure before you let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes. Then, simply release the remaining pressure and fluff.
You can also cook using the rice setting, which cooks for roughly 12 minutes depending on your Instant Pot model.
There are a few reasons that the rice ends up sticky. One being that the rice was not rinsed well enough. Rice is a starchy grain that without rinsing will clump or stick together. Another reason could be the rice as left in the instant pot to rest and the residual steam caused the stickiness. Lastly, the rice was not vented after the 10 minutes of natural release.
There are two pressure-releasing functions with an Instant pot – natural and quick release. Natural is letting the pressure release from the pot on its own. Quick is a manual release of pressure by turning the value to venting. Read each Instant pot recipe to see which release function is needed for perfectly cooked rice.
For every 1 cup of dried basmati, you will end up with approximately 3 cups of cooked rice. Basmati is unique in that it makes over double the quantity once cooked due to its slender shape.
It is 1 cup of rice to 1.25 cups of water. Use this ratio if looking to make a double batch of cooked rice.
If desired, you can soak for up to 10 minutes then proceed with the recipe. However, soaking the rice is not required (only rinsing). Either way, the end result is light and fluffy rice.

Kids In The Kitchen
Cooking tips and suggestions for kids making this recipe.
- Rinsing rice (before cooking) helps to remove any excess starch on the grain, keeping the rice from becoming too sticky and mushy.
- Use a fork or spatula to “fluff” the rice instead of stirring to keep the rice light and fluffy. If stirred, the rice can become mushy.
- As soon as the rice is cooked, remove from the Instant pot. Do not leave rice on rest mode.
Storage Instructions
In the fridge: Store plain rice for up to 5 days in the fridge in a covered container.
In the freezer: Place cooled rice onto a baking sheet to freeze for at least 30 minutes. Once frozen, the rice can be added to a container, Ziploc bag or stasher bag to freeze for up to 3 months.
For best results, thaw rice in the fridge overnight and reheat the next day.
In the pantry (dry): Store dry rice in a cool dark place for a few months or up to a year if sealed tightly. Dry rice can be added to an airtight container once the seal is broken to extend its shelf life.
Reheating Instructions
Microwave: Add thawed rice to a microwave-safe bowl with a splash of water to rehydrate the rice. Cover with a damp paper towel to retain the moisture and microwave in 30-second increments. Stir in-between until rice is hot.
Stovetop: Place rice in a covered pot over low to medium heat to reheat until hot (approximately 3-5 minutes for thawed and 7-10 minutes for frozen). Add a splash of water to the bottom of the pot to prevent the rice from burning. Stir occasionally.
