How to Make Beef and Bean Burritos
Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients
Make sure you have all the ingredients on hand:
- Ground taco meat
- Refried beans, we suggest Crockpot Refried Beans
- Flour tortillas
- Cheese (shredded)
- Additional toppings (such as diced tomatoes, lettuce, salsa, sour cream, etc.)
Step 2: Prepare the Ground Taco Meat
Cook the ground taco meat in a skillet over medium heat until fully browned. You can season it with taco seasoning or your favorite blend of spices to enhance the flavor.
Step 3: Warm the Refried Beans
In a separate pan, heat the refried beans until they are warm and easy to spread.
Step 4: Combine Refried Beans with Ground Beef Taco Meat
Transfer the cooked taco meat to a medium-sized bowl. Add the refried beans to the bowl, and mix them together thoroughly until well combined. This creates a flavorful and hearty filling for your tacos.
Step 5: Assemble the Tacos
Lay out the flour tortillas on a clean surface or plate. Spoon the meat and bean mixture evenly onto each tortilla, spreading it out to cover the surface.
Step 6: Add Cheese and Toppings
Sprinkle shredded cheese generously over the meat and bean mixture on each tortilla. If desired, add any additional toppings like diced tomatoes, shredded lettuce, salsa, sour cream, or your favorite condiments.
Step 7: Fold and Roll
Carefully fold the sides of each tortilla inwards and then roll it tightly from the bottom, creating a neat and compact taco.
Step 8: Serve and Enjoy
Place the assembled tacos on a serving platter and serve immediately. You can also accompany them with additional sides like rice, guacamole, or a fresh salad.
PRO TIP: Make these burritos before you leave for camping, wrap in tin foil and store in your cooler. Your family can grab and reheat as desired.

Recipe Tips and Tricks
Customizable Toppings Bar: Set up a toppings bar with a variety of options like diced tomatoes, shredded lettuce, chopped onions, sliced jalapeños, and fresh cilantro. This allows everyone to customize their burritos according to their preferences.
Melted Cheese Technique: If you love melted cheese, add the shredded sharp cheddar cheese to the warm meat and bean mixture just before assembling the burritos. The heat from the filling will melt the cheese, creating a gooey and delicious texture.
Beans Texture: Consider mashing some of the refried beans before mixing them with the meat. This creates a creamier texture, and you’ll still have some whole beans for added texture.
Add a Splash of Lime Juice: Squeeze fresh lime juice over the meat and bean mixture for a bright and citrusy flavor. This can elevate the overall taste of the burritos.

Storage Instructions
At Home:
- Refrigeration: If you have leftover burritos, refrigerate them promptly. Place them in an airtight container to prevent the filling from drying out and absorbing other odors from the fridge.
- Freezing: If you want to extend the storage time, you can freeze the burritos individually or in a single layer to prevent sticking. Wrap them tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and place in a freezer-safe bag.
- Reheating from Refrigeration: To reheat refrigerated burritos, unwrap them and place them in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 10-15 minutes or until warmed through. Alternatively, use a microwave, but be cautious to avoid making the tortillas too soggy.
- Reheating from Freezing: Thaw frozen burritos in the refrigerator overnight. Reheat as mentioned above, adjusting the time as needed for thorough warming.
Camping:
- Preparation at Home: Prepare the burritos at home and assemble them with all the ingredients. For camping, it’s convenient to have everything ready to go.
- Use of Cooler: If camping for an extended period, bring a cooler with ice packs to keep the burritos cool and safe to eat. Make sure the cooler is well-insulated to maintain a consistent temperature.
- Storage in Ziplock Bags: Store individual burritos in large Ziplock bags, removing excess air to prevent freezer burn. This can help keep them organized and protected from the elements.
- Reheating Over Campfire: Follow the campfire heating instructions you provided earlier. Wrapping burritos in heavy-duty foil is essential for even heating and protection from the flames.
- Heat on Camping Stove: If you have a camping stove, you can reheat the burritos in a pan or directly on the grates. Keep an eye on them and flip them frequently for even warming.

Dorothy MacRae says
can you freeze them and if so how do you cook frozen ones. please reply to email thankyou!!
Jodi Danen, RDN says
Hi Dorothy. I sent an email, but thought I’d answer here too. You can freeze the burritos. I like to wrap them in parchment paper and then place them into a ziplock bag to freeze. The parchment-wrapped burrito can go straight into the microwave, or you can unwrap and reheat it as well. I’d start with 2 minutes, flip then heat for another minute or two.
