INGREDIENT SWAP: The key is to use a cream-based soup. Swap the traditional mushroom soup for cream of chicken, cream of asparagus or cream of broccoli.
Recipe Tips and Tricks
- Fresh vs. Canned Green Beans: While the recipe calls for canned green beans, you can use fresh or frozen green beans as well. Just blanch them quickly before adding to the slow cooker for a bit of a crisper texture.
- Creamy Soup Variations: Experiment with different cream of mushroom soup brands or flavors, like cream of celery or cream of chicken, for a unique twist on the classic recipe.
- Add Cheese: For extra richness and flavor, consider adding a cup of shredded cheddar or Swiss cheese to the mixture before cooking. It will melt into the sauce, making it even creamier.
- Spice it Up: If you like a little kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce to the soup mixture for a subtle heat.
- Fresh Herbs: For a burst of freshness, toss in some chopped fresh herbs like parsley, thyme, or rosemary before serving.
- Bacon Bits: Sprinkle some crispy bacon bits over the top with the French-fried onions for added crunch and smoky flavor.
- Extra Veggies: Add more vegetables like sliced mushrooms, diced bell peppers, or even some frozen peas to make it heartier and increase the veggie variety.
- Make-Ahead: You can prepare the soup mixture ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator until you’re ready to assemble and cook the casserole. This saves time on the day you plan to serve it.
- Slow Cooker Liners: Consider using slow cooker liners for easy cleanup. They make cleaning up after cooking a breeze.

Storage Instructions
To store your Crockpot Green Bean Casserole, begin by allowing any leftovers to cool to room temperature. Once cooled, transfer the remaining casserole into an airtight container or a resealable plastic bag, making sure to remove as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn. You can refrigerate the leftovers for up to 3-4 days.
If you intend to store it for a more extended period, consider freezing it for up to three months. When you’re ready to enjoy it again, reheat in the microwave or oven until it’s heated through, adding a touch of milk or broth as needed to restore its creamy texture. Stir occasionally during reheating to ensure even warming.

My family loved this! Super easy and I made it the day before.
Jazz says
Hi, can you use frozen or fresh green beans? Also, does using cream of chicken alter the flavor too much? Would using cream of broccoli be better? We don’t like the flavor of mushrooms so using a substitute would be great!
Jodi Danen, RDN says
Hi Jazz! You can certainly use fresh or frozen beans. I think cream of chicken or cream of broccoli would work very well. If it were me, I’d try the cream of chicken first. I’d love to know which substitutions you choose and how it works! Good luck and enjoy!
