How To Choose a Ripe Avocado
Choosing a ripe avocado is key to tasty avocado toast. In just 3 simple steps, you can successfully pick a ripe avocado for any avocado recipe!
- Look at the avocado. Select an avocado that has a dark green skin that is bumpy yet free of bruises.
- Hold in one hand. Place the avocado in the palm of your hand and curl your fingers around the pear-shaped fruit.
- Apply pressure. Gently apply pressure by squeezing the avocado with your palm (resist pressing your fingers into the avocado). A ripe avocado will yield to pressure while an unripe avocado will be too firm to squeeze. If the avocado feels mushy or has squishy spots this is a sign it is overripe.
Ripening Tips
- Place the avocado in a brown paper bag with a banana or apple for a day or two on the counter.
- Store the avocado on the counter or in the pantry. Refrigerating an avocado will extend the shelf life.
- Place in direct sunlight like on a window sill or a sunny location in your home.

FAQ
Kids often resist trying new foods simply because they are unsure of how it will taste. To encourage your kids to give avocados a try, explain that an avocado has a buttery and creamy taste without much flavor. It will pick up the flavor of the ingredients it is paired with like the eggs, bacon, or cheese in these toast recipes.
Each of these toasts calls for 1/4 large avocado, which means you can save the leftovers to use at breakfast the rest of the week. To store, place the avocado in an air-tight container with the pit or tightly wrap the avocado and pit in plastic wrap.
If the avocado is slightly brown on the surface after storing, carefully scrape a butter knife over the top to remove the brown and reveal the green.
