How to pick a ripe avocado:
Look at the avocado. Select an avocado that has dark green skin that is bumpy yet free of bruises.
Hold in one hand. Place the avocado in the palm of your hand and curl your fingers around the pear-shaped fruit.
Apply pressure. Gently apply pressure by squeezing the avocado with your palm (resist pressing your fingers into the avocado). A ripe avocado will yield to pressure while an unripe avocado will be too firm to squeeze. If the avocado feels mushy or has squishy spots this is a sign it is overripe.
