Tips and Tricks
- Choose a Ripe Squash: Opt for a spaghetti squash that is firm, heavy for its size, and has a vibrant color. Avoid squash with soft spots or blemishes.
- Season Creatively: Don’t hesitate to get creative with your seasonings. Experiment with herbs like rosemary, thyme, or basil, or add a dash of red pepper flakes for some heat. You can also drizzle a bit of balsamic vinegar or a squeeze of lemon juice for a zesty twist.
- Grill Marks: To achieve those appealing grill marks on the cut side of the squash, resist the temptation to move or flip it too frequently. Let it cook undisturbed for a few minutes before checking.
- Indirect Heat: If your grill allows for it, you can also use indirect heat by turning off one side of the grill or moving the squash to the cooler side once it has grill marks. This helps prevent burning while allowing the squash to cook through.
- Toppings Galore: Get creative with toppings! Besides Parmesan cheese, consider adding roasted garlic, fresh herbs, toasted nuts, or a drizzle of olive oil or balsamic reduction for extra flavor and texture.
- Keep an Eye on Time: Be vigilant about the cooking time, as overcooking can make the squash mushy. Check for fork tenderness, and don’t exceed the recommended cooking time.
- Safety First: Always exercise caution when handling hot grill grates and squash. Use oven mitts or grilling tools to protect your hands.
