- Spicy Chex Mix – add 1 teaspoon of chili powder to the savory seasoning blend.
- Sweet Chex Mix – omit the Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic and onion powder and instead add 2 teaspoons cinnamon and 2 teaspoons sugar to the butter.
- Holiday Chex Mix – use the sweet Chex mix seasoning then add chocolate chips, M&Ms and chopped nuts as dry ingredients.

Storing Instructions
Just like with our Chex Mix Muddy Buddies, storage matters! Always wait to store until completely cooled then seal in a Ziploc bag or airtight container.
Homemade Chex mix tastes best when consumed within 2-3 days of making. You can store at room temperature or in the fridge.
Most importantly, don’t forget about dividing the snack mix into snack or sandwich-sized bags then adding to lunch boxes as your kids head off to school or summer camps.
Recipe Notes & Tips
- Add to a charcuterie board instead of breadsticks.
- Always bake! The key to a crisp and crunchy Chex mix is baking for the full 45-minutes.
- Make dairy free by using a vegan butter or swapping in coconut oil. The coconut oil is especially tasty if turning this snack into a sweet version.
- Always read ingredient labels! We often get comfortable with gluten-free items and brands, but labels are always subject to change. It never hurts to recheck labels and is a best practice to teach kids as they start to become more comfortable cooking in the kitchen.
- A single batch makes roughly 12 servings. Make a double or triple batch depending on the number of hungry guests you plan to feed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Chex mix is meant to be crunchy so to prevent a soggy snack , remember three things – stir, bake, cool. By stirring the seasoning into the dry ingredients, you will prevent the buttery mixture from pooling on one side of the pan. By baking, you allow flavors to soak up into the dry ingredients and crisp to perfection. By cooling before storing, you reduce the likelihood of it turning soggy in the storage container. If you do end up with a soggy Chex mix, troubleshoot by baking for another 10-15 minutes to see if this will help turn it crunchy.
Store-bought mixes can be extremely high in sodium. By making Chex mix homemade, you have complete control over the amount of salt that you add to the recipe to turn this snack favorite into a healthier version.
We always use a large roasting pan when making a large batch of Chex mix. It makes it very easy to stir without making a mess. You could also use a sheet pan if a roasting pan is unavailable. To make it easier to stir, spread the Chex mix across multiple pans.
Kids In The Kitchen
Cooking tips and suggestions for kids making this recipe.
- If you have been spending more time in the kitchen, then you might notice that this recipe bakes at a temperature lower than other recipes. Majority of recipes bake at 350°F or higher, but this recipe maxes out at 250°F. The reason is you want to cook Chex mix low and slow to create the craveable crunch.
- The seasoning blend for Chex mix requires you to melt butter before adding in the other flavors. To melt butter, always use a microwave-safe bowl. You can place the entire stick of butter into the bowl if it fits or cut into chunks. Covering the bowl with a paper bowl and heating in 20-second increments (stirring in-between) helps to melt the butter while preventing it from popping all over the microwave.
- Homemade Chex mix requires the cook to stir the snack mix every 15 minutes to ensure every last piece is crunchy. With the assistance from a kitchen helper, remove the pan from the oven. Holding one end with an oven mix, use a spatula to stir the mixture. Then, return the pan back to the oven and reset the timer to 15 minutes.
