What Fruit to use?
- 1 pineapple
- 1 small watermelon
- 4 kiwi
- 1 cantaloupe
- 2 dragon fruit
How To Make
Like you would a fruit salad, pick your favorite variety of fruit and aim for a rainbow of colors!
Prepare the fruit
Start by washing the fruit then cutting the rinds off the pineapple, watermelon, cantaloupe, kiwi, and dragon fruit. Kids might need assistance at this step as it can be a bit tricky for kids depending on their age to remove the rinds. As parents, we can encourage our kids to watch and learn as we help remove the rinds.
Next, let your kids remove the seeds from the cantaloupe and discard (along with the rinds). Place the fruit into a bowl, leaving one piece on the cutting board. This gives enough space on the board to safety cut each piece of fruit. Check out our guide Knife Safety For Kids for additional tips before kids start to slice.
Slice the fruit
Next, carefully cut the fruit into slices or chunks. Place the cut fruit onto the skewers alternating between all the colors.
Pro Tip: Slicing the fruit makes it a bit easier for younger kids to thread the fruit safely onto the skewer.
Serve
Last but not least, serve the fruit skewers! Wondering how to display fruit kabobs? Laying on a platter makes it super easy for kids to grab a skewer when ready for a snack.
Place vanilla yogurt or any fruit dip into a small serving bowl next to the platter for easy dipping. Garnish with fresh mint if desired.
Mix It Up: Turn this recipe into chocolate-dipped fruit kabobs to enjoy as an afternoon treat or evening dessert.
Frequently Asked Questions
Pick fruits that do not brown as easily such as melons, dragon fruit, kiwi, mango, plums, grapes, or berries to keep fruit skewers fresh. Incorporate fruits such as apples, bananas, or pears if kids are going to eat the skewers right away as these fruits are more likely to brown if left on a display.
There is no need to soak the skewers unless you plan to make grilled fruit kabobs. If so, learn How and When to Soak Bamboo Skewers.
Place sliced fruit in an air-tight container overnight to thread on the skewer the next day or store the assembled fruit kabobs in a large ziplock bag or container overnight in the fridge.
