Recipes Notes & Expert Tips
- Types of sweeteners – depending on your dietary preference, sugar, honey, maple syrup and stevia are all options that can be used to sweeten the lemonade. Each one offers a different flavor profile. The best way to decide is trying a different one each time until you find your favorite.
- Make ahead – the lemonade concentrate can be stored in the freezer for up to 6 months making it super easy to make a big batch ahead of time then removing from the freezer as requested. The concentrate can be stored in a container, Ziploc bag or ice cube tray. Remove from the freezer an hour before you are ready to serve to allow the lemonade to slightly thaw.
- Flavor options & additions – this frozen lemonade recipe has all the flavor you could need but can also be changed to satisfy your taste buds. Add lime juice or zest, orange or grapefruit juice, or chopped fruit such as berries to the blender or right on top as a garnish.
- Make creamy – add a scoop of ice cream into the blender to turn this drink into a creamy dessert. Keep dairy-free by using coconut cream or oat milk ice cream.
- Lemon zest – the zest of the lemons makes for a tasty garnish or to boost the lemon flavor of the drink. If desired, zest the lemons prior to juicing for ease.
Kids In The Kitchen
Cooking tips and suggestions for kids making this recipe.
- Making a homemade lemonade concentrate is fun! You get to learn how to dissolve sugar. Start by adding all the ingredients – water, sugar and lemon juice – to a pot on the stove. Then, you will bring to a boil, which is when the water starts to bubble. You will want to stir the whole time to help the sugar dissolve. After boiling, let the mixture cool. You can pour the concentrate into a shallow bowl and place in the fridge or freezer to cool quicker. It is ready to go once cooled!
- When blending, start with adding 2 cups of ice and 1 cup of concentrate. Taste test before pouring into a cup. Do you like the consistency and flavor? If so, you are good to go! If you want it to be slushier, add more ice and continue blending.
- The leftover lemonade concentrate can be frozen for future use. Pouring into ice cube trays is a really easy way to freeze. If you don’t have ice cube trays at home, the concentrate can also be poured into a mason jar, plastic container or Ziploc bag.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! You can either freeze lemon juice on its own or create the concentrate then freeze. Being able to freeze the juice allows you to purchase bulk lemons when on sale or to use up lemons if growing at home.
Frozen lemonade is best when served immediately to keep the craveable slushy texture. However, we all know kids love to take a sip then run off with friends or dive into the pool. In this case, you can easily bring the slushie back by transferring back to the blender or placing the cup directly into the freezer until the kids are done playing.
It really comes down to personal preference but finding varieties that are juicy, tart and flavorful are the best bet. The most common varieties for lemonade are Eureka and Meyer lemons. Eureka lemons are bright yellow with a tangy flavor that offer the traditional lemonade flavor. Meyer lemons on the other hand are going to be smaller and rounder. These lemons have a sweeter flavor profile and are best for those that prefer a less tart lemonade.
