Start by applying Jack O’ Lantern stickers to the outside of each clean and dry glass. I ordered the ones shown here on Amazon for about $8.00. You can find them here. We used small plastic cups so the drink didn’t get too big for little hands and they aren’t breakable. You can use any glass you’d like, just adjust the amount of ingredients to fit.
Next, place 2-3 scoops of vanilla ice cream into each cup, adjusting the number of scoops based on the glass size and your preference. Slowly pour Fanta soda over the ice cream, filling the glass to just below the rim. Pouring the soda slowly helps control the foam and prevents overflow.
For an extra treat, you can top each float with a swirl of whipped cream and add a green licorice or candy stick to mimic a pumpkin stem, completing the Jack O’ Lantern look. Serve these immediately with a straw and spoon. These floats don’t do great sitting and waiting, so make sure to make them and hand them out at the same time.
Tips and Tricks
- Chill the Glasses: For an extra frosty float, chill your glasses in the freezer for about 15-20 minutes before making the floats. This helps keep the ice cream from melting too quickly.
- Control the Foam: Pour the Fanta slowly and at an angle to reduce the amount of foam. This prevents spills and ensures a perfect ratio of ice cream to soda.
- Flavor Variations: While Fanta Orange is the classic choice, feel free to experiment with other flavors like grape, strawberry, or cream soda for different color and taste combinations.
- Stickers: If you can’t find Jack O’ Lantern stickers, you can create your own using adhesive vinyl and a craft cutter or simply draw faces on the glasses with a non-toxic marker.
- Ice Cream Alternatives: For a dairy-free option, use a coconut or almond milk-based vanilla ice cream.
How To Serve For A Party
Here’s how to scale up the recipe and make these floats efficiently for a crowd.
- Multiple liters of Fanta Orange soda (or your preferred Fanta flavor)
- Several quarts of vanilla ice cream (estimate 2-3 scoops per guest)
- Jack O’ Lantern stickers
- Clear plastic cups
- Straws and spoons
Decorate the Cups: Apply Jack O’ Lantern stickers to the outside of each clear plastic cup or mason jar in advance. This can be done a day or two before the party to save time.
Set Up a Serving Station: Designate a table or counter as the float-making station. Arrange the decorated cups, ice cream, soda, whipped cream, licorice sticks, straws, and spoons for easy access.
Pre-scoop the Ice Cream: To streamline the process during the party, pre-scoop the ice cream onto a lined baking sheet and freeze the scoops. This way, you can quickly add the ice cream to each cup as guests arrive.
Efficient Serving: Enlist a friend or two to help serve the floats. One person can handle adding the ice cream, another can pour the soda.
DIY Station: Consider setting up a DIY float station where guests can make their own floats. Provide a variety of ice cream flavors and toppings for customization.
