Tips and Tricks
- Thaw Frozen Fillets: If using frozen fish fillets, it’s ideal to thaw them before broiling. Thawing in the refrigerator overnight or under cold running water will help ensure even cooking.
- Consistency of Glaze: Aim for a balanced consistency when mixing the glaze. If the glaze seems too thick, you can slightly adjust by adding a bit more melted butter to make it easier to spread over the fish.
- Adjusting Sweetness: If you prefer a less sweet flavor, you can reduce the amount of brown sugar in the glaze. Likewise, if you prefer a stronger sweet flavor, you can increase the amount.
- Broiling Distance: For best results, position the broiler rack at the appropriate distance from the heat source. Typically, a position about 4-6 inches from the broiler element is good for fish, but follow your oven’s recommendations for broiling fish.
- Monitoring Cooking Time: Keep a close eye on the fish while it’s under the broiler to avoid overcooking. Fish tends to cook quickly, so frequent checking helps prevent it from becoming dry or tough.
- Testing for Doneness: To check if the fish is cooked, use a fork to gently separate the flakes. If the fish easily flakes apart and appears opaque all the way through, it’s done. Be cautious not to overcook, as fish can become dry quickly.
- Resting Period: Let the fish rest for a minute or two after cooking. This allows the flavors to settle and the juices to redistribute, ensuring a moister and more flavorful outcome.

When reheating, do so gently to prevent drying out the fish; using methods like a microwave, oven, or stovetop with a bit of added moisture can help retain its tenderness. If you do not plan to consume the leftovers within this time frame, consider freezing them. Wrap the fish tightly in plastic wrap, then place it in a freezer-safe container or resealable bag, ensuring to remove excess air before sealing. Frozen, the fish will maintain its quality for up to 2-3 months. Thaw frozen fish overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
