Ingredients

- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 2 teaspoons yeast
- 3 cups flour, plus extra for dusting (or gluten-free flour)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
How To Make
This 5 ingredient recipe is super simple for kids to make and comes together easily. Follow the step-by-step instructions to have this bread recipe in the oven within the hour.
Preheat the oven
Start by preheating the oven to 375°F.
Warm the milk
Next, place the milk into the microwave and heat for 30 seconds or until warmed. We used 1% milk, which can be substituted for skim or whole milk if preferred.
Pro Tip: You will want to heat the milk until it is warm, not hot. If it’s too hot, it will kill the yeast.
Blend the wet ingredients
To a gallon-sized ziplock bag, add the warm milk (not hot), yeast, and sugar.
After the ingredients have been added to the bag, seal and mix well by shaking the bag. Let sit for 5 minutes. Encourage your kids to watch the bag closely to look for bubbles to start forming. Let your kids know that when the bubbles start to form, you know the yeast is active.
Add the dry ingredients
Next, add the flour and salt to the wet ingredients in the bag. All-purpose or bread flour works great for this recipe.
Seal the bag and mix again for about 5 minutes. Then, let the bag sit and rise for 5 minutes.
Knead the dough
While the dough is resting, add a dusting of flour onto a clean work surface. Embrace yourself – things are about to get a bit messy but also a whole lot more fun!
When ready, remove the dough from the bag and knead for 5 minutes. Then, place the dough into a loaf pan sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Spray the top of the dough with the spray as well. Cover with a damp kitchen towel and let rise for 30 minutes.
Bake the bread
Once the bread has doubled in size, bake for 25-30 minutes.

Lenora Wadsworth says
Can you use instant yeast in this recipe?
Jodi Danen, RDN says
Hi Lenora, I have not tried it myself, but I would imagine that would work just fine.
Rhi says
I tried this recipe with my kiddos twice! Followed the instructions to a T. None of the doughs that we made turned out. They were all dry and crumbly and when we got them as mixed as we could, they were as hard as a rock! What gives?!
Jodi Danen, RDN says
Hi Rhi, I’m so sorry to hear it didn’t work out for you. I’m wondering if it might be how your measuring the flour. When working with gluten free flour I always use the spoon method of spooning flour into the measuring cup then sweeping across the top with the flat side of a knife. If you aren’t measuring this way you might have more flour and not enough liquid.
