Tips and Tricks
- Uniform Slicing: Try to slice the sweet potatoes uniformly to ensure even cooking. You can use a mandoline slicer or a sharp knife for this.
- Soaking: If you have the time, consider soaking the sliced sweet potatoes in cold water for about 20-30 minutes before baking. This can help remove excess starch and result in crispier slices.
- Seasoning Variations: While your current seasoning mix is delightful, feel free to experiment with other seasonings as well. Smoked paprika, nutmeg, allspice, or even a pinch of cayenne pepper can add interesting flavors.
- Salt: Don’t forget to add a sprinkle of salt to enhance the overall flavor. Sweet potatoes can benefit from a touch of saltiness to balance their natural sweetness.
- Layering: Instead of arranging the sweet potato slices in a single layer, you can layer them slightly on top of each other. This can create a more tender and caramelized texture.
- Parchment Paper: Consider lining your baking pan with parchment paper for easy cleanup and to prevent the sweet potato slices from sticking to the pan.
- Drizzle: If you’d like a more caramelized texture, drizzle a bit more melted butter and brown sugar over the sweet potato slices about 10 minutes before they’re done baking.
- Toppings: After baking, you can sprinkle some chopped fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme for a savory twist, or a handful of chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts for added crunch and flavor.
- Serve with Dips: Baked sweet potato slices are delicious on their own, but you can also serve them with yogurt-based dips, aioli, or even a simple sprinkle of flaky sea salt for a gourmet touch.
Temperature and Timing: Keep an eye on the sweet potato slices as they bake. Oven temperatures can vary, so adjust the cooking time accordingly. You’re looking for slices that are fork-tender and slightly caramelized around the edges.

While we haven’t tried, you could easily swap the cinnamon and brown sugar for any spice combination for a savory twist. We would recommend picking any combination of garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, chili powder, rosemary, or thyme.
Storage and Reheating Instructions
To store your baked sweet potato slices, ensure they are completely cooled before proceeding. Place any leftover slices in an airtight container, layering them with parchment paper or wax paper to prevent sticking. Alternatively, you can wrap them in aluminum foil. Store the container or wrapped slices in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. If you plan to keep them longer, consider freezing them in a single layer on a baking sheet until they’re firm, and then transferring them to a freezer-safe container or resealable freezer bags. Frozen sweet potato slices can be stored for up to 2-3 months.
To reheat, simply bake them in a preheated oven at 350°F until heated through, or use a microwave for a quicker option. Remember that reheated slices might not be as crisp as when freshly baked, but they will still retain their delicious flavor.
Kids In The Kitchen
Cooking tips and suggestions for kids making this recipe.
- Ask a helper to cut sweet potatoes thin with a chef’s knife or a mandolin. Always wear a cut glove on the hand holding the sweet potato to practice knife safety.
- To melt butter, place in a microwave safe bowl and heat in 15-second increments, stirring in between. You can also cover the top of the bowl with a piece of paper towel. This will help to keep the butter from popping all over the microwave and making a mess.
- Fork tender means you can easily insert a fork into the potato without resistance. If it is difficult, place the potatoes back into the oven to cook for an additional 10 minutes then try again.

Not sure I will make it again. For 2 large sweep potatoes the butter/cinnamon/brown sugar was not enough. 30 minutes turned into 50 minutes. I used a good size pan but still had some overlapping and they just took forever. Mine were nowhere near as crowded as in the pic used on here and I could not get the browning effect. These were basically thin slices of sweet potatoes with a slight taste of the extra ingredients if you really focused. I really wanted to like them enough to make them again but it is very unlikely.

Hi Wayne, it’s a bummer the recipe didn’t work out well for you. For mine, I used a mandoline to get the slices really thin, I wonder if you sliced them without if that lead to the longer cook time? You could always double the butter/sugar mixture if you try again. I appreciate the feedback!
Sweet thang says
I actually par boiled the whole potato. I put it in the refrigerator until the next day. I sliced the potatoes and extended the recipe fir my potato sizes. I baked and all turned out nicely.
Denise Gill says
How long did you boil the sweet potatoes?
Jen says
I thought they turned out great! I cut them with a knife all about the same size. I doubled the recipe as well. I will make them again!
