FAQs
Any non-stick cooking spray will work. We used avocado oil.
Toss banana slices with pineapple or orange juice – the fruit juice helps the chips from browning. Drain. Place bananas in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking pan. Bake at 250° F for 2 hours.
Sure can! Adding different flavor combinations is an another way to keep snack time interesting. Try sprinkling with peanut butter powder, tossing in cinnamon and sugar or mixing with lime juice and chili powder.
Once air fried or baked, store in an airtight container after completely cooled. You can also separate the batch into portions and store in ziplock or stasher bags. As kids build their lunchboxes in the morning, they can easily add a bag of banana chips.
To extend the shelf life of these chips, add a napkin or paper towel to the bag to absorb any excess moisture. This will also keep the chips crisp and crunchy just like your kids like.
The thinner you slice, the crispier the chips will be. We recommend slicing all chips 1/4-inch thick. If your kids prefer super crunchy chips, then slice 1/8-inch thick.
Which Banana Is Best To Use?
Bananas that are just ripe – not brown and not green – are going to be the best options for dehydrated banana chips. Brown or mushy bananas will not work for this recipe but are definitely delicious in Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Banana Muffins, Healthy Banana Bread with Applesauce or Spinach Muffins with Banana and Blueberries.
While green bananas would crisp if used, you will lose the sweetness of the chips. By selecting bananas that are just ripe, you will be the crispiness along with a sweet flavor.
What To Serve With Banana Chips?
From Yogurt Fruit Dip to Fruit Dip with Cool Whip, banana chips are also delicious served on a Smore Charcuterie Board or Savory Charcuterie Board and Smashed Avocado Toast. The versatility of these banana chips is another reason we skip the snack aisle and make our homemade version.
