How To Make Sandwiches on Sticks
Start by gathering the equipment, which includes a cutting board, small cookie cutters, knife and skewers. We used caramel apple skewers because they are the ideal length when making these sandwiches for kids.
You will then use the cookie cutters or knife to cut the cheese and bread. The possibilities are endless when it comes to the shapes. From circles to flowers, let your kids choose their desired cookie cutter. This is also a great step to involve your kids if they are begging to help.
TIP: Use a biscuit cutter or a small glass cup if cookie cutters are unavailable.
Next, assemble the skewers layering bread, cheese, meat and vegetables. For sandwiches with peanut butter or Nutella, cut the bread into squares with a knife. Spread with peanut butter or Nutella and sprinkle on chocolate chips or top with banana slices before sliding on the skewer with any other desired fruits.
TIP: Add sliced or whole strawberries to the skewer with peanut butter or Nutella sandwiches.
Once the skewers are assembled, add to a lunchbox or Bento box with any desired sides or dips!

Kids In The Kitchen
Cooking tips and suggestions for kids making this recipe.
- Adults should show kids how to assemble and disassemble the sandwich skewers.
- Let kids learn how to use a cookie cutter to cut the cheese, bread or veggies. This is a great learning opportunity as they have to consider which shape would work best for the ingredient.
- Swap the ingredients based on diet preferences or needs. The meats could include turkey, ham or chicken while the cheeses could be cheddar, mozzarella or American.
Recipe Notes
- Spread a dip on the cold meat and cheese skewers for more flavor. Hummus, French onion dip, ranch, spinach dip or guacamole are all delicious options. You can also place a dollop of any dip into the lunchbox for kids to dunk their meat, cheese or veggies.
- If you find your gluten-free bread is crumbling when making the shapes or assembling on the skewer, toast it lightly to help it hold up better.
- Aim for uniform sizes so everything fits on the skewer.
- Assemble by alternating between layers of meat, cheese, bread and veggies to create a balanced bite.
- Add more color to the skewer by incorporating lettuce or spinach leaves.
What To Serve with Sandwich Skewers?
Fresh fruit or vegetables: A mix of berries, grapes, melons or pineapple can be a tasty addition to the lunchbox. Additionally, tomatoes or cucumbers can be served along with carrot, celery or bell pepper sticks.
Pasta or potato salad: Keep things classic by adding a pasta or potato salad to lunch. Check out our Gluten Free Pasta Salad and Gluten Free Potato Salad if you need a super simple recipe.
Deviled eggs: Another bite-sized option that is easy to serve and offers a boost of protein at lunch. This recipe for Dairy Free Deviled Eggs is always a kid favorite.
Pickles: A variety of pickles like dill, bread and butter or sweet pickles can add flavor. Green and black olives are another alternative if your kids are not pickle fans.
